When we fast, we afflict our soul: that is, we deny and restrain our mind, desire, will and emotions from their normal God given functions which directly or indirectly affects our body. From the Diagram of our Tabernacle, our Body encases our Spirit and Soul therefore if we neglect and starve our body of the basic food and nutrients it requires to carry out its normal function we are thus destroying the body. When our spirit discerns that the body can no longer accommodate its presence, it leaves the body thus cause its death.
The scriptures in Ecclesiastes 12:7 confirm this truth.
Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it. Eccl 12:7 KJV
In the case of a believer in Christ Jesus, born-again and Spirit filled, his death is often peaceful and appealing towards Heaven. This is because while he was here on earth, his soul was daily walking with the Holy Spirit in his spirit such that there was an existence of a strong spiritual attraction between his spirit and his soul. So, when the body dies the spirit because of this spiritual tie with the soul takes up the soul to the third Heaven to remain with Christ. This saint is described as one who is asleep in Jesus
