Dutse—Malam Garba Gumel, the former spokesperson of late Premier of Northern Nigeria, Sir Ahmadu Bello, Saurdauna of Sokoto, has faulted those saying Nigeria at 56 had not recorded any development, noting that such people were only exposing their poor knowledge of history.
Dmatrixnews gathered that, Gumel who was the information officer of late Sardauna of Sokoto, said: “I laugh if a writer says since independence, Nigeria did not record any progress, when our national heroes that fought for independence will be proud of us wherever they are.
“When I was in Barewa College, there were only four secondary schools in old Kano Province; five in Kaduna, while I was schooling in the present Adamawa State.
“It took me four days to reach Yola in a lorry from Kano and there was electricity in only seven Kano provinces, which comprises Kano City, Hadejia, Gumel, Kazaure, Dawakin Tofa, among others.
“Now, how many electricity stations are in Kano and Jigawa states, without including those in the other 34 states and Abuja?”
He noted that there were remarkable achievements in education, roads, health, communication, transport, among other sectors.
He commended the efforts of the Sarduana, Aminu Kano, Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, Dr. Nnamdi Azikewe, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Chief Chris Okotie-Eboh, among others, who he said spent their lives in the struggle for the emancipation of Nigerians and the country’s unity.
He described members of the Movement for the Actualisation of Sovereign State of Biafara, MASSOB, and South South as ‘political jobbers’ and commended President Muhammadu Buhari for declaring Biafra a closed matter.
