Biafra: Yoruba Groups Demand Nnamdi Kanu’s Immediate Arrest
A coalition of Yoruba groups have called on Acting President Yemi Osinbajo, to order the immediate arrest of the leader of the Indigeneous People of Biafra (IPOB) Nnamdi Kanu.
The groups which include; the Yoruba Youth Congress (YYC) and the Coalition of Southwest Youths groups (CSY) aligned themselves with the position of the Coalition of Northern Youth which asked the United Nations (UN) to peg IPOB as a terror group.
Stressing that the IPOB leader’s actions are attempts to provoke Nigerian youths, the groups also accused Kanu of taking Nigerians for granted.
While addressing press men in Akure, Chairman of the Coalition of Southwest Youth groups who also doubles as the National President of Yoruba Youths Congress, Prince Dapo Adepoju warned Kanu not to provoke violence in the country, noting that nobody has the monopoly of violence.
“We decided to keep mute all along as we felt Kanu and his men will allow for dialogue. But we are surprised that despite the fact that the Northern youths who earlier issued a quit notice to the Igbo’s has made a U-turn on their decision, Kanu and his men are still moving around spreading hate speeches.
“We are tired as we are losing patience, in as much as we understand that Kanu does not have the support of the majority of the Igbo’s, we felt its high time the security operatives do their job in getting him arrested.
“Kanu does not have monopoly of violence as efforts are been made at dousing rising temper of over 25 million Yoruba Youths who are not happy with the war-like attitude of Kanu and his men.
“We, therefore, use this medium to call on the Acting President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo to order the arrest of Kanu. We equally support the letter addressed to the UN by the coalition of Nothern Youths to declare IPOB a terror group,” Adepoju said.
The group also urged the current administration to organize a national youth confab as it will go a long way in itemizing the issues affecting Nigerian youths.
Meanwhile, IPOB has raised alarm alleging that there is a fresh plot to murder Nnamdi Kanu by some service chiefs and politicians.
A press statement signed by the IPOB Publicity Secretary, Mr Emma Powerful claimed that Nnamdi Kanu has recently been receiving death threats from known individuals and groups over his utterances.
However, the group said it is perturbed over the constant threats to the life of its leader, whose only sin was his constant attempt to liberate both Christians and Igbo indigenes from Nigeria.
IPOB listed some of those who have at one time or the other openly threatened to kill Nnamdi Kanu, saying that others who were nursing secret plots to do so have also been uncovered by the security arm of the group.
Among those listed are; former Chief Security officer to Abacha, Major Hamza Al Mustapha, IGP, Ibrahim Idris, Chief of Army Staff, Major General Tukur Buratai, Former President of Nigeria, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, formerLagos State Police commissioner, Alhaji Abubakar Tsav, former governor, Yerima Shettima.
Others listed from the south east who are; Ohaneze Ndigbo led by Chief Nnia Nwodo, Gov. Willie Obiano of Anambra State, Gov, Rochas Okorocha of Imo State, Gov. David Nwaze Umahi of Ebonyi State, Methodist Prelate, Samuel Uche.
“We understand that Federal Government of Nigeria mapped out huge amount of money and political positions for them to carry out the heinous crime against Kanu. We promise them that any attack on Nnamdi Kanu or assassination attempt will radicalize the struggle for Biafra independence to the point which no one can curtail the radicalism for Biafra independence anymore.
“IPOB members cannot stop half way because the struggle for Biafra quest for freedom is at the point of no return, therefore Government of Nigeria should fix a date for referendum where people will decide through their votes, whether to leave Nigeria or stay in Nigeria,” the statement read.
